One could argue that Bill Gates was once an asshole due to the agressive and non-competitive business practices of Microsoft, as well as his prickly personality. But evidently he's mellowed these days, giving away billions - along with Melinda Gates - through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. And, along with Warren Buffet, he founded The Giving Pledge, whereby billionaires pledge to give away at least half of their fortunes. His philanthropy is not without skeptics.
It's kind of hard to argue that a billionaire is an asshole when he commits to giving away something like $80 billion to charity. Warren Buffett made his money being an old-fashioned "buy and hold" investor, as well as living lightly. He has pledged to give away 99% of his wealth. And in 2009, he formed The Giving Pledge with Bill Gates, where signees pledge to give away at least 50% of their wealth to charitable causes.
Steyer also has signed onto the The Giving Pledge. He oversaw some environmentally and socially questionable investments while working as a fund manager, but then got out of that and created NextGen America, an environmental advocacy nonprofit and political action committee. Most recently, he's spent more than $10 million on the Need to Impeach campaign, referring to our favorite orange cheeto who was somehow elected president
